CVOR: How do I Maintain It?
If you are operating a commercial vehicle or fleet in the province of Ontario, then you will need to have a valid CVOR certificate. Getting and maintaining your CVOR certificate is critical to having a career as an operator. In this article, we will review how to obtain and maintain your CVOR certificate.
Getting your CVOR certificate
When you are ready to apply for your CVOR certificate you will do so through the Ministry of Transportation. Currently, the cost is $225. You will need to submit this fee along with your application that provides relevant information about the operator such as the type of operation, corporate officers and directors, estimated size of fleet and distance to be travelled in the coming year, and information about past years (if applicable).
In addition to your application, you will also have to complete a written test which is based on the content found in the Commercial Vehicle Operators Safety Manual.
Renewing your CVOR certificate
You will have to renew your CVOR certificate before it expires. If your safety rating is Satisfactory or Excellent, this renewal will come due every two years. If your safety rating is Satisfactory-Unaudited or Conditional, you will have to renew your CVOR certificate every year.
Maintaining a good safety rating
Maintaining a good safety rating is key to being able to maintain your CVOR certificate and renew it each time it comes due. To do this, it is important that your vehicles are well maintained and that you and/or your drivers are well trained.
