Air brakes are found in most large commercial vehicles, and while you may have experience driving a standard pickup truck, operating a vehicle with air brakes is very different. With proper use, air brakes can make your truck driving experience much safer. But for those unfamiliar with air brakes, the experience can be frustrating and you may even risk damaging the engine.

Besides that, each province and state has very specific guidelines about the use of air brakes and you will need to pass an MTO test before you’ll be allowed to operate a vehicle that has them.

What you’ll learn in the Trukademy Air Brakes Course

When you take the Trukademy Air Brakes Course, you’ll learn the safe and efficient operation of air brakes in commercial vehicles. Among some of the skills you’ll learn are:

• Ensuring you have the minimum air pressure necessary for the air brakes systems. (at least 85 psi for a bus and at least 100 psi for a truck).
• Monitoring the air pressure buildup rate. (It should take no more than two minutes for the air pressure to go from 85 psi to 100 psi when the engine is between 600 and 900 rpm).
  
• Ensuring the correct air pressure for the compressor.
  

Preparing for the MTO Air Brakes test

The Trukademy Air Brakes Course will help you to prepare for both the written and practical air brakes tests. There are 3 variations of the knowledge test – one for truck air brakes systems, one for trailer air brake systems and one for both.
