How to prepare for the MTO test
What are the requirements for the MTO test for commercial vehicle licenses?

If you are considering starting a career as a truck driver in Ontario, you will need to get a special driver’s license that allows you to drive commercial vehicles. The type of license you need to get will depend on the type of vehicle you wish to drive – however, if you wish to driver tractor-trailers with air brakes, then you will need to get an “A” license.
To obtain this license you will have to take both a written and a practical test with the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO).In this article, we will outline some of the requirements and what you must do to prepare yourself for these tests.
Age
To qualify for an “A” license, you must be at least 18 years old.
Training
You cannot simply go into an MTO testing center and ask to be tested for your commercial driver's license. You must first undergo a thorough training process that includes both classroom and in-vehicle sessions. Both courses and instructors must be licensed and approved by the MTO.
Health
To obtain your commercial driver’s license, it is essential that you are in good health. You will need to pass both a hearing and a vision test as well as submit a medical report. Once you have your commercial driver’s license, you will need to submit a new medical report every few years to the MTO (the frequency with which you must submit these depends on your age.)
Written Test
The MTO written test will test your knowledge about driving, safety, maintenance, and legislation. This is prepared largely in the classroom although you must study on your own as well. The MTO offers several online practice tests that can help you prepare.
Road TestFinally, to obtain your commercial driver’s license, you must pass an MTO road test. To take the road test, you must have first passed the written test, and bring proper identification with you.
