Why is a Defensive Driving Course Important?

Jerit Justin • December 24, 2021

Safety is and should be the number one priority of many truck drivers and trucking companies. Taking a defensive driving course – or enrolling your drivers in one – is an excellent way to improve or ensure the safe driving practices of your drivers.

While most truck drivers are generally good drivers, they have no control over what other drivers on the road do. In fact, many accidents between commercial and passenger vehicles are the fault of the passenger vehicle driver. But that doesn’t mean the consequences are any less tragic.

When you take a defensive driving course, you not only learn how to drive more safely yourself, but you learn to anticipate likely behaviour of other drivers and respond accordingly. Knowing how to drive defensively is important for a number of reasons:

Safer Driving

No one wants to get into a collision while driving a commercial vehicle. At best, you are inconvenienced and delayed (in the case of a minor accident) and at worst, someone could be seriously hurt or even killed in a collision.

Lower Insurance Premiums

Safer driving and less accidents means that your insurance premiums will be lower as well.

Better Reputation

Whether you are an individual driver wanting to maintain a clean driving record so you have more choice when it comes to who you’d like to work for, or whether you manage a trucking company and are looking to find an edge over the competition, taking a defensive driving course can enhance your reputation.

As a safer driver or trucking company, will have a better reputation and therefore more opportunities in terms of jobs or contracts.
