If you are looking to take the next step in your truck driving career, then a HAZMAT (hazardous materials) training course might be right for you. There is a huge demand right now for truck drivers in North America, so job prospects are good – but when you have an additional skillset under your belt such as HAZMAT training then job prospects – not to mention salary potential – your prospects become even better.
What do HAZMAT drivers do?
HAZMAT truck drivers transport a variety of toxic materials including flammable gases and solids, poisons, explosive materials, and nuclear waste. Drivers that haul these materials must adhere to the highest safety standards. Often these drivers are paid a premium because of their qualifications.
Besides being required to maintain an extremely good driving record, HAZMAT drivers often have the additional responsibility pumping their cargo out of their tank and waiting for it to be professionally cleaned.
To become a HAZMAT driver you must first obtain your commercial driver’s license and then obtain a separate certification for HAZMAT. Trukademy’s HAZMAT training is designed to help you pass the knowledge test required for getting this certification.
To receive certification, you will also have to undergo a criminal background check. Previous convictions for violent crimes will immediately make applicants ineligible for a HAZMAT certification.
Most transportation of toxic materials is done with tankers, so in addition to your HAZMAT endorsement, you will also have to get a tanker endorsement. You may get these separately or at the same time but both require their own knowledge test.
HAZMAT drivers are required to renew their endorsement every three years.
