MELT Program

MELT is the acronym giving to the mandatory training courses for tractor trailer drivers which is now required throughout most of Canada. It stands for Mandatory Entry Level Training and it is training that is required in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. While MELT is not yet required in British Columbia, the provincial government there has been discussing it and it is likely we will see MELT being required in British Columbia in the not too distant future.

MELT Course in Ontario

Ontario was the first of the Canadian provinces to adopt and require MELT for all new commercial truck drivers. This happened in July of 2017. Now, in order to obtain a commercial (Class A) license, students must take a minimum of 103.5 hours of classroom training as well as 18 hours training off-road behind the wheel, and 32 hours training on-road. This training must be completed before you can take your road test for your Class A license.

Who Must Get MELT Training?

·Anyone taking a road test for a Class A license.

·Anyone who has a restricted Class A license and who wishes to upgrade to a full Class A.

·Anyone who has an invalid Class A for more than 3 years and who wishes to reinstate it (suspended, expired, or downgraded).

·Anyone who has a valid commercial driver’s license from another country.

·Anyone who has had a commercial driver’s license from another province for less than 12 months.

·Drivers in Ontario who obtained the Class A license prior to July 2017, are not required to take the training.
