CVOR Training

The MTO requires that all truck drivers undergo the proper Commercial Vehicle Training for Operations (CVOR) in relation to:

·Driving a commercial motor vehicle.

·Hours of service.

·Log books.

·Daily vehicle inspection.

What is CVOR?

In Canada, each province requires that a National Safety Code be issued to each of its carriers. In Ontario, this is called CVOR.

The CVOR system is part of a larger program called the Carrier Safety Rating (CSR) program. Vehicles are monitored and they are taken off the road if they are deemed to be unsafe. Monitoring is done through roadside safety checks, audits as well as through records of any tickets or accidents.

Who is required to get a CVOR?

·Trucks with a gross weight of 4500 kg or more.

·Buses that seat 10 or more passengers.

·Commercial vehicles with license plates from either the US or from Mexico

·Recently, tow trucks have also been added to this list.

Who does NOT need a CVOR?

·A truck or bus with a license plate from another province or territory in Canada.

·A truck that has a registered gross weight of less than 4300 kg – this applies whether or not it is towing a trailer.

·A truck or bus that is leased by a private individual for less than 30 days, the purpose of which is to move their personal goods or to transport passengers at no fare.

·A pickup truck or motor home that is being used for personal purposes.

How do you get a CVOR in Ontario?

In order to get a CVOR in Ontario, you will have to apply to the MTO, fill out an application and pay a fee of $250. Carriers based in Ontario, will also have to complete at pass an MTO knowledge test before obtaining their CVOR. The fee for this test is currently $32.

Once you have successfully completed the test and submitted your application, it generally takes about 10 days to receive your CVOR.
